Google Wants To Replace Your Password With Your Phone

Google is trying to eliminate the password and make logging in a lot easier. A login procedure should be secure, simple and hassle-free and Google is already trying to make this happen. Rohit Paul, an Android device owner on Reddit, posted yesterday about a new logging procedure Google is presently rolling out on an invite-only basis.

In a confirmation released by a Google spokesperson to Techcrunch:

We’ve invited a small group of users to help test a new way to sign-in to their Google accounts, no password required. ‘Pizza’, ‘password’ and ‘123456’—your days are numbered.

This means as time goes on, everyone should be able to use this feature. This is how it works: Entering your username on any device should send a push notification to your phone where you can accept or reject the login request without the need to type your password. This slide explains it:

As mentioned earlier, this is available to an invite-only group and if you’re lucky to get the invite mail from Google, you should be able to test this new feature as well. After joining the group, you only need to enter your email while signing in to Google. After that, a notification will be sent to your phone asking if you requested to login from another device.

However, you need to setup a lock screen security on your phone to use this in case someone else has your device. In case of phone loss or theft, Google still allows you to login normally with your password to disable any device you no longer have with you.

It should be noted that this type of login isn’t new. Yahoo already has something similar called Yahoo Account Key. It arrived with thenew Yahoo Mail appand works in almost exactly the same way.

If this becomes widely accepted, we may see Facebook and some other websites adopting it.
