Samsung Galaxy S7 & Galaxy S7 Edge Officially Announced

Today at Mobile World Congress, Samsung announced its much anticipated additions to the Galaxy product line: Samsung Galaxy S7 and Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. The launch confirmed quite a lot of the rumors that preceded the announcement, discarding others. The devices look almost exactly like previously seen leaks and as expected, both pack some impressive features.

Samsung Galaxy S7 comes with a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 2560 X 1440 and a display density of 577ppi. On the other hand, Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge has a 5.5-inch screen with the same screen resolution. Samsung Galaxy S7 has a dimension of 142.4 x 69.6 x 7.9mm and weighs 152g. The S7 Egde is a bit thinner and measures 150.9 x 72.6 x 7.7mm. It also adds a few grams to bring the mass to 157g.

Both devices have IP68 waterproof rating making the phones properly water-resistant. Although the camera is only 12MP which is a bit low compared to Samsung Galaxy S6, the technology behind the new camera makes it superb. It has a wide aperture of f/1.7 and there is smart optical image stabilization to give great shots. The new Dual Pixel technology allows great low-light photography and blazing fast auto-focus.

As for the internals, both devices are powers by Qualcomm Smapdragon 820 SoC and Samsung Exynos 8890. There are speculations that the choice of processor is going to be market-dependent. There is a 4GB RAM with LPDDR4 technology and the internal storage is optional– it’s set at 32GB and 64GB. Samsung has finally re-introduced the SD card slot and it supports up 200GB external storage.

The S7 comes with a 3000mAh battery and the S7 Edge has a bigger battery with a capacity of 3600mAh. Both support wired and wireless Fast Charge which can be turned on and off. While most OEMs are going for USB Type-C, Samsung choose to stick with the same old micro-USB 2.0 connectivity port.

As expected, TouchWiz is now powered by Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Samsung has released an officer introduction video for both devices.
