These are the first photos of HTC's next major smartphone

Photos of HTC's next major smartphone, reportedly called the HTC 10, have surfaced on the web today. Unlike Samsung and LG, HTC didn't unveil its latest flagship at Mobile World Congress earlier this month, so this is our first good look at what the company has been working on.

OnLeaks initially posted images of a "prototype" HTC 10, revealing a USB-C port along with capacitive buttons on each side of the phone's home button / fingerprint reader. The back of the HTC 10 is, let's say, unique looking with oversized beveled edges and the headphone jack relocated to the top; it was next to the USB port on last year's M9. It also looks like HTC has added laser autofocus beneath the flash. At least, that's what we'd guess the dark part is.

After the prototype images were tweeted, @evleaks followed up with what appear to be official renders of the HTC 10 — this time in silver. It's an interesting mix, with the front clearly inspired by the iPhone-like A9, and a back that sticks closer to HTC's past designs. At least in these two leaks, HTC's logo is absent from the front of the phone, but there's still a bit of unused space above the home button. OnLeaks claims that the HTC 10 will feature a 5.15-inch QHD display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 12-megapixel camera.

Most of those specs are par for the course in high-end 2016 Android smartphones, but it's interesting that HTC is going smaller in screen size, similar to LG's approach to the G5. HTC hasn't yet announced an event for its latest phone, but hopefully it won't be long before we hear how the company hopes to top the impressive competition from LG and Samsung.
