Samsung Will Start Shipping Foldable Smartphones Next Year: Report

We already know Samsung is working on foldable display. Earlier this year, we published an article with details about a patent that clearly showed that the Korean company may come up with a smartphone with foldable display anytime soon.

A new report from the company’s home country says Samsung will start selling smartphones with foldable display next year. According to the report, it’s already in the works and this will be a 7-inch tablet that can fold into a 5-inch smartphone. Internally called Project Valley, it appears there’s already a working prototype of this design.






According to ETNews, a Korean news website, mass production will start in the second half of this year. However, there are a few challenges to be overcome before this happens. Lee Chang-hoon, director of Samsung Display division said earlier this year:

Development of Foldable OLED is taking place according to our plan. We are planning on mass-production and release of this product by discussing with our partners.

Although the Samsung executive didn’t specifically mention foldable smartphones, ETNews reported that an insider actually confirmed this.

If this eventually happens, it might be the next big thing in mobile technology and spark an even bigger trend. We have reasons to believe this report. The patent is more than enough proof. Here’s a video concept:
