We are currently on transition from 3G network to 4G network and right now you must have been thinking of buying or swapping a 4G enabled phone or SIM.


Having a 4G smart phone those not mean all network carrier or operator SIM cards will work on it. All 4G LTE network providers have different Frequency and Bands that their network operate on. Read this post carefully so you would not be surprised when your smart phone those not support a carrier 4G network.

How To Know The 4G Band A Smart Phone Supports Before Buying or Swapping a 4G Sim

  • Before buying a smart phone make sure you go through the phone specifications carefully
  • Find out or check the 4G band it supports
Note: Phone manufacturers like Samsung, LG, Sony and others make different variants of a particular model of a phone, this phones will look alike in terms of the physical aspect but have different features in each of the phone variants. Phone manufacturers like Infinix, Techno, innjoo, Gionee and others have single variants that supports 4G LTE Band 1, 3, 7, 20. This Bands are popular in Asia, Middle East and Africa.

How To Know A Network Carrier 4G LTE Band like MTN, Spectranet, Smile, GLO, Ntel. See Them below

  • Ntel uses band 3 (1800mhz) and band 8 (900mhz)
  • Spectranet and Swift both use band 40 (2300mhz)
  • MTN uses band 7 (2600mhz) and 20 (800MHz)
  • Smile uses band 20 (800mhz)
  • Glo uses band 28 (700MHz) 

Many Nigerians are complaining about Glo 4G LTE, that it connects and disconnects in short time frame, i believe this post has explained the reason for the disconnection and connection problems. Most, if not all popular smart phones in Africa with 4G LTE do not support Glo 4G LTE band which is on band 28. Phones like Infinix or Tecno phones with 4G LTE do not support 28/700mhz which glo 4G LTE uses.

MTN is currently the only network carrier or operator that uses 800 and 2600 bands and can be used by most 4G LTE device and smart phones. Before you buy a smart phone please go through the specifications and check for the 4G LTE bands it supports.
