Meet This Flying Car Manufactured by Airbus With 2-in-1 Capability
The company that manufactures civil aircraft named Airbus has unveiled a flying car at the Geneva Motor Show 2017, with two capabilities which is to move on the road as a car and also to fly like a plane, one of its kind.
Airbus named this flying car as “Pop.Up” System, this vehicle has been designed in collaboration with the prestigious company Italdesign, which has been working with different car manufacturers since 1968, to form a concept that aims to revolutionize the field of land and air mobility.
Pop.Up System has a modular structure that allows you to divide the vehicle into three totally different parts, all of them are, autonomous, and electrical. The main one, in which the passengers will travel, is a capsule which has a length of 2.5 meters long by 1.4 meters wide. This, in turn, is coupled with two different platforms, depending on the level of congestion on the roads, the need for the user or their preferences, thanks to its artificial intelligence system that will be the one that chooses the mode of travel.
If it is decanted by road transport, it is attached to a chassis of carbon fiber with wheels whose electric propulsion system is based on a battery that grants a range of 130 kilometers of speed. When disconnected from the capsule, this module will return itself to a battery recharging station until another user demands it.
When an air transport service is required, it will simply join with a 5-meter long drone powered by eight rotors and four engines that will simply enable the flight as well as the vertical take-off and landing. The autonomy of this structure will be 100 km. In addition, according to Airbus, you can recharge 100% of the battery in just 15 minutes.
However, without any doubt, another strong point of this innovative car-drone is that it was born to offer an interesting alternative of mobility on demand so that those who request their services via the app will select the place of pickup and arrival after that Pop.Up System will take care of the rest.
However, for now, Airbus has not revealed the date of when it will be seen for the first time in action this interesting concept that joins the world of flying cars that has already taken off. The aircraft company itself works in parallel on its Vahana ‘flying taxis’ project, while others such as the Dutch PAL-V already market its first model of these characteristics.
