WhatsApp Hits One Billion Users But It’s Not A Surprise

This shouldn’t come as a surprise since this is probably the most widely used instant messaging app globally. WhatsApp just hit one billion users and this further proves that the messaging platform might be around for a pretty long time to come.

In a blog post on it’s official website yesterday, WhatsApp announced the milestone. While this is actually a great feat, we’re not really surprised. Almost everyone has WhatsApp installed on their devices since it cuts the amount spent on text messaging.

Appreciating it’s users, the company said in the blog post:

As of today, one billion people are using WhatsApp. That’s nearly one in seven people on Earth who use WhatsApp each month to stay in touch with their loved ones, their friends and their family.We are proud of this milestone, and we’re humbled by the extraordinary ways all of you have used WhatsApp.

As it’s user base increases, WhatsApp doesn’t seem to be relenting in making the platform better. The removal of the $1 annual fee was well received by users. According to WhatsApp:

So even as we celebrate this achievement, our focus remains the same. Every day, our team continues to work to improve WhatsApp’s speed, reliability, security and simplicity

WhatsApp is also working on making the platform a competitor to Skype in terms of video calls. Some leaked screenshots showed this some late last year.

The company is also working on end-to-end encryption to make the platform a lot more secure and Facebook integration is in the works. We also received some leaked screenshots lately that showed this.
