Facebook Pays $15 Each To its Users Over a Lawsuit
After two years of deliberation on the lawsuit by Facebook users who claimed Facebook used their image showing their face for Sponsored Story Ads without their consent, a United State Federal Judge approved the sum of $20 million in August 2013 as settlement to the plaintiffs.
The case was filed in April 2011, five plaintiffs were involved and made the claims below;
Facebook used their image showing their face for 'Sponsored Story ads', which were created when members 'like' company pages or websites.
They also claimed that Facebook did not seek the consent of parents of people who are under the age of 18, whose images show their face before using the images for ads.
However, Facebook is said to have broken a Californian law which states that companies are forbidden from using the likeness of people in ads, without their consent. This was after in different occasion, Facebook was quoted to have vowed that its users would have more control over how their images would be used in ads, a promise which was violated when it used people’s ads without their permission.

The plaintiffs are now receiving their $15 settlement each.
